Some trapped gullies normally retain water as a seal, so water alone does not establish a blockage. We assess the sediment and check whether the connecting outlet can accept flow.

Suction recovery is planned around the depth of the gully and safe vehicle access. Removed silt and debris are collected rather than flushed into the downstream pipe. Open gratings and hoses are separated from site traffic, and gullies affected by process contamination need waste handling suited to the material present.
Outlet checks after cleaning
After the pot has been cleaned, we check the accessible outlet and note any continued high level or poor discharge. A downstream restriction or surcharged network can still make a cleaned gully overflow, so that condition is kept separate from the emptying result.
Gullies on the same site can fill at very different rates. Trees, loading areas and construction runoff can all increase local sediment or debris, and the maintenance interval is better based on observed loading than applied uniformly to every gully.

Should a trapped gully contain water?
Some retained water is normal where the gully design includes a trap seal.
Will removing leaves clear a silted gully?
Leaves at the surface can hide sediment in the pot or a restricted outlet.
Does cleaning guarantee no surface flooding?
No. Downstream restrictions and drainage capacity can still cause flooding.
Is the connecting pipe checked separately?
Yes. An emptied pot can still have a restricted connection.
Why do some gullies need more frequent cleaning?
Their catchments may deliver more leaves, grit or process debris than others.
